Centre gives nod for SEZs at Navi Mumbai, Nagpur

MUMBAI: The Centre has approved the Maharashtra government proposal for setting up two special economic zones (SEZs) in Navi Mumbai and Nagpur to enable more textile export oriented units (EOUs) to come up.

"The Centre has given its clearance to set up two SEZs in Dronagiri in Navi Mumbai and Nagpur near airport area. The land acquisition formalities for these SEZs will be complete in a month's time," the Maharashtra Textile Minister, Mr Satish Chaturvedi, told reporters here on Thursday.

Mr Chaturvedi, speaking on the sidelines of textile seminar organised by FICCI, said the State Government has already passed a resolution for relaxed labour laws in these SEZs.

"SEZs will not witness any more Inspector Raj. In order to avoid labour ministry interference, the industry department will monitor the labour activities," he said.

The State Government has already identified lands for these SEZs and it is sorting out the differences with the Defence department in acquiring land in Nagpur.

''The proposed SEZ in Nagpur will be clubbed with the upcoming International cargo hub,'' the Minister said.

As textile sector promises more employment opportunities, the State Government will encourage more textile-based EOUs to start units within the SEZ, he added. - PTI
