Info-Tech MTNL to float tender for 10 lakh new broadband connections NEW DELHI: State-run telephony services provider MTNL on Friday said it will float a tender for creating capacity of 10 lakh new broadband connections over the next few months, after which it will be able to provide Internet services of up to 100 mbps.
"MTNL has already applied for five lakh new broadband connections. Once this phase of expansion is over, we would float a tender for creating additional 10 lakh connections,'' MTNL Chairman and Managing Director R S P Sinha told reporters here. He said the company, which presently provides broadband Internet services of up to 20 megabyte per second (mbps), would be able to upgrade its system for a speed of 100 mbps. The company is expected to float the new tender within the next one month and has already identified 70 acres of land in Delhi and Mumbai for its planned broadband expansion. MTNL today introduced a new M-commerce service for its landline and GSM subscribers under which users would be able to pay their bills through SMS. "We believe that this would be the right step forward in ensuring the fastest, most convenient and hassle -free way to make bill payments for all our customers,'' Mr Sinha said. MTNL has tied up with mobile transactions services provider Suvidha to enable its M-commerce service. He said the company has ordered equipment to upgrade its system for providing 3G services as and when spectrum is allocated and has already conducted i nternal test for the service. - PTI
