New multi-focal IOL boon for aged persons

COIMBATORE: A city eye-care centre has introduced a multi-focal intraocular lens (IOL), which gave clear vision for distance, intermediate and near vision without the need for any external glasses.

The 'Tecnis' multifocal IOL from a US-based company, is using a patented diffractive design with aspheric optics and would give clear, crisp vision for distance to near, besides improving the 'quality of vision,' Dr D Ramamurthy, Medical Director of The Eye Foundation, told reporters here on Monday.

With the person aging, the aberrations in the eye tend to add to each other, thus deteriorating the quality of vision, Mr Ramamurthy said.

The normal intraocular lens that was implanted has positive spherical aberrations like an aged normal lens. So apart from the need for glasses for near vision, the quality of vision subsequent to surgery was like that of an elderly person, he pointed out .

However, Tecnis IOL has a patented aspheric design with a prolate surface in the front because of which it mimics the natural lens of a 20-year-old and tends to cancel the spherical aberration of the cornea, giving excellent quality of vision, Mr Ramamur thy claimed.

Patients once implanted with Tecnis lens not only do not need glasses for distance, near and intermediate activities, he said adding that they also enjoyed a quality of vision comparable to a 20-year-old. - PTI
