Union Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan reviewed the performance of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) in Mangalore on Tuesday.

P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, informed the Minister that the port recorded a growth of 11.5 per cent in cargo handling in the first nine months of the current financial year.

The port handled 27.01 million tonnes of cargo during the first nine months of 2012-13 as against 24.23 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

Tamilvanan said the Minister expressed happiness over the growth in the traffic during the period. The Minister was also informed of the steps taken by the port in attracting cargo and steps taken for increasing the railway-bound traffic, container traffic and cruise traffic.

Vasan also reviewed the progress of various development works tat the port.

On the fishermen’s demand for a fishing harbour at Kulai (near New Mangalore Port), the Minister suggested that the NMPT Chairman interact with the agencies concerned in this regard.
