Virus lures PC users with Brad Pitt

Bangalore , Oct. 10

ANTI-VIRUS company Trend Micro reported on Monday that a malware called TROJ_NETLOG.C was using Hollywood star Brad Pitt as bait.

According to a press release issued by the company, they were able to intercept a Trojan and have issued a warning about it.

Trojans are a type of malware, or malicious software, which reaches your computer undetected through e-mail or apparently harmless downloads. However, once downloaded, they create a lot of damage. A Trojan allows a remote attacker to access the victim's computer across a network, like the Internet. The hacker has access to one's data, as well as control over the computer once the Trojan is active.

Brad Pitt acted in a Hollywood flick Troy last year. It is ironic that he is again the icon of a Trojan!

This particular malware aims to appeal to the visual senses of its targets. The package arrives as a compressed (.zip) file, which contains a note that reads, "The images were altered by covering the private parts so as not to displease certain public."

Along with this, an executable file with a filename `brad pit.exe' is attached. A teaser image in the e-mail entices the viewer into running the executable file. Once executed, another image automatically opens.

While the user is distracted, the virus makes malicious changes to the computer. This type of social engineering technique used by malware to trick unsuspecting users is becoming common. The file itself has been identified as a Trojan, and is named TROJ_NETLOG.C. The intentions of the Trojan are as yet unknown. So if you see Brad Pitt smiling back at you from your inbox on your computer, it is wiser to delete it permanently. You have been warned against Brad Pitt!
